The inaugural Alphonsian Youth Gathering (AYG 2024) in Sumba, Indonesia left an indelible mark on the lives of the 12 delegates from the Vice-Province of Malaysia & Singapore. The gathering brought together youths from different countries and cultures, united by their faith and their desire to connect with others. For many, the experience was a journey of discovery, growth, and spiritual renewal.

Arrival and Initial Activities

The Malaysian youths arrived in Singapore on June 26 and were greeted with a warm welcome. They enjoyed an outing on June 27, followed by a fundraising and commissioning mass. This initial phase set the tone for their journey, which continued as they left for Sumba on June 29 to participate in AYG 2024.

Homestay Experience: A Window into Simplicity and Connection

From June 30 to July 2, the delegates experienced homestays with various host families across Sumba. For many of these city-dwelling youths, this was an eye-opening experience. Used to the hustle and bustle of urban life, they found themselves in serene, nature-filled environments with limited internet connectivity. This setting encouraged meaningful communication and connection with their host families, who welcomed them with traditional dances and warm smiles, creating a shared experience that laid the foundation for the gathering.

Parade and Cultural Exchange

On July 3, the participants moved to the main venue and kicked off the event with a vibrant 4-kilometer parade. The parade showcased the energy and enthusiasm of the youths, with each country proudly waving their national flags and singing their unique cheers. The evening ended with a cultural presentation, highlighting Indonesia’s rich heritage.

Formation and Mission: Deepening Understanding and Inspiration

July 4 was dedicated to the theme of “One Family,” helping the youths understand their place within the larger Redemptorist family. Through sharing sessions, guest speakers like Ms. Portia from Cebu, and insights from Fr. Gerard Louis of Singapore, the delegates explored the meaning of unity and community. In the afternoon, the focus shifted to “One Mission,” with Fr. Ivel’s talk on St. Clement inspiring the youths to embrace their mission despite challenges, culminating in a Eucharist and celebratory night featuring cultural performances from various countries.

Empowerment and Spiritual Growth

On July 5, Fr. Rogerio Gomes (Superior General) addressed the youths, encouraging them to become “Young Missionaries of Hope.” He emphasized the importance of a spiritual life rooted in the word of God and called on them to step beyond local boundaries, bringing their mission and enthusiasm to the global stage. Our delegates led the icebreakers with games and songs throughout the session, rallying the youths with a sense of vibrancy.

Returning to Lives after AYG

As the delegates returned home, they reflected deeper on their personal encounters. The homestay experience, which exposed them to a simpler way of life, had a profound impact. They acknowledged the challenges they faced, but also the growth they experienced.

Melfred, one of the participants, summed up the experience as “filled with love and unforgettable memories.” Emilia echoed the sentiment, saying it felt like home, surrounded by the warmth and hospitality of the Singaporean and Indonesian youths. Diane, Sharvin, and Brooklynn all shared similar sentiments, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to meet new people, experience diverse cultures, and be immersed in the beautiful scenery of Sumba.

Karla described AYG 2024 as a “memorable and sensational event” that brought her closer to her faith and to others. Christelle, who attended her first overseas Redemptorist youth gathering, found the experience eye-opening and transformative. She credited the simplicity, generosity, and love of her foster family and the locals with inspiring her to be more appreciative and grateful.

Emmanuel and Verona both spoke about the humbling experience of seeing the simplicity of life in Sumba and the genuine joy in the smiles of the locals. They realized the importance of gratitude, appreciation, and spreading joy to others, regardless of circumstances.

AYG 2024 was more than an event – it was a transformative experience, a testament to the power of unity, love, and mission of the Redemptorist. These delegates now carry with them the memories, lessons, and inspiration to spread joy, gratitude, and the Gospel to others, becoming the Young Missionaries of Hope that Fr. General had exhorted them to be.
