In September 2024, the city of Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India, faced an unprecedented calamity when devastating floods ravaged the city, leaving residents struggling to access basic necessities like food and water. The aftermath was traumatic, with homes and streets clogged with water. The people had never witnessed this kind of awful flood in Vijayawada.

In response to this crisis, the Redemptorists of the Province of Bangalore, especially those who are working in the State of Andhra Pradesh, along with the Navajeevan Bala Bhavan, an NGO run by Salesians Vijayawada, sprang into action. With the necessary permissions in place, we collaborated to reach the most affected areas, distributing essential items such as blankets, bedsheets, and towels to Hundreds of families.

Our interactions with the affected families revealed heartbreaking stories of loss: household items, clothing, valuable documents, and, most painfully, loved ones swept away by the floodwaters. Their grief was palpable, and we were humbled by their gratitude for our modest efforts.

As a Congregation, we were blessed to be able to extend a helping hand. We remain grateful to God for enabling us to serve those affected. Our prayers continue for the people of Vijayawada, that they may find healing and solace from the trauma they endured.
