On October 18, 2024, Fr. Rogério Gomes CSsR, Superior General, delivered an invigorating message to the Congregation’s formators in a virtual meeting that highlighted the vitality and promising future of the Redemptorist formation. During the meeting, Father General emphasized the beauty and responsibility of forming new generations of missionaries, encouraging formators to face the challenges of the present time with enthusiasm.
Training with purpose and relevance
Fr. Rogério began by emphasizing that formation must go beyond traditional theological teaching. Formators have the important challenge of guiding future missionaries in a constantly changing world, where creativity, discernment and adaptability are essential. He invited formators to be bold, open to dialogue with reality and to provide young people with the necessary tools to live their vocation with joy and authenticity.
Culture of commitment and belonging
In a world where values such as stability and fidelity seem to be eroding, the Superior General stressed the importance of cultivating those in formation a strong sense of belonging to the Congregation and the mission. He emphasized that, rather than focusing on the ephemeral and the disposable, formators can inspire young people to fully commit themselves to their vocation and to develop a solid and persevering spiritual life.
A spirituality of service close to the people
Father Rogério emphasized the value of an authentic spirituality based on service to others, far from clericalism or individualistic approaches. He reiterated that Redemptorist missionaries are called to be close pastors, sensitive to the needs of the people, with deep compassion and the ability to listen. This vision embodies the Redemptorist charism of always being at the service of the poorest and most abandoned.
Openness and dialogue on sexuality
In a very positive way, he encouraged the formators to open spaces for honest dialogue on sexuality, a topic often avoided, but fundamental for the personal and spiritual growth of the trainees. Through a pastoral, human and scientific approach, future missionaries can be prepared to face the challenges related to sexuality and human relationships with balance and sensitivity.
Personalized accompaniment and sense of history
Personal accompaniment is essential for each young person to discover their own path of faith. Father Rogério emphasized the importance of a formation that values the unique life stories of those in formation, helping them to recognize the signs of God in their lives. He also insisted on the importance of knowing the rich history of the Congregation as a source of inspiration and guidance to face the challenges of the present with confidence.
Training for mission and generosity
In a final call to action, the Superior General urged formators to step out of their comfort zone, promoting a formation that encourages future missionaries to be available for the most arduous tasks, always on behalf of those most in need.
