The project responds to the large number of people who visit the Shrine of Perpetual Help in Baclaran under the guidance of the Redemptorists in Manila.
Commuters in southern Metro Manila can expect significant improvements in transportation, according to the Philippines Department of Transportation, as five new stations on the LRT-1 Cavite Extension are set to open by the end of November 2024. The new stations, which mark Phase 1 of the much-anticipated project, include Redemptorist, MIA, Asia World (PITX), Ninoy Aquino, and Dr. Santos (Sucat).
As the Metro-Manila operator explains on Twitter: “The station name was chosen after a proposal to recognize the Redemptorist Church, officially known as the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help and popularly known as Baclaran Church. The Redemptorists arrived in Baclaran and built a small wooden chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help in 1932. In 1958, the small chapel was transformed into a huge Shrine where thousands of Filipino faithful attend Novenas every Wednesday and Masses every day.”
Philippine media reports that Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC), the private operator of the LRT-1, has confirmed that the five new stations extend the rail line by another six kilometers, bringing the total length of the line to 26 kilometers. The LRT-1 runs from FPJ Station (formerly Roosevelt) in Quezon City to Baclaran Station in Pasay, serving about 320,000 passengers per day. With the addition of the new stations, daily travelers is expected to increase by 80,000 to 400,000 passengers. By 2028 or 2029, LRMC aims to further increase capacity to accommodate about 650,000 passengers per day.
