On the morning of November 9, 2024, a fire broke out in the Redemptorist monastery in Braniewo, Warsaw Province. Fortunately, no one was injured and the historic Church of the Holy Cross, adjacent to the building, was not affected by the fire.

Shortly after 6 a.m., a fire broke out in the attic of the house, consuming the entire attic. As the fire was extinguished, the second floor was filled with water. Ten vehicles, including two ladder trucks, and 40 firefighters took part in the rescue operation. The firefighters are currently investigating the cause of the fire, and the Redemptorists are temporarily living in a building belonging to the Sisters of St. Catherine.

Our religious community in Braniewo, which numbers five brothers, has experienced great kindness from parishioners and citizens. On the same day, nearly 30 people helped clean up the monastery after the firefighting operations. Local municipal authorities and representatives of the archdiocese are also making organizational and material efforts to help protect the historic building from the coming winter. Religious communities and parishes of the Warsaw Province are also sending their help.

We pray for the Redemptorist community in Braniewo and for all those who saved lives and property.

Fr. Mariusz Mazurkiewicz CSsR, Warsaw.
