Drug addiction (substance abuse) is one of the Global evils.  It has spread its wings far and wide that its evil effect destroys not only the self but also family institution and social fabrication.  As it is said, it has a strong global market, the reason why this gets still strong commodity.

“Drug abuse impoverishes every community where it exists.  It diminishes human strength and moral fibre.  It undermines esteemed values” says Pope St. John Paul II.  The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “clandestine production of and trafficking in drugs are scandalous practices.  They constitute direct co-operation in evil.”  On the same wavelength Pope Francis highlights, “Drug addiction is a plague that trample on human dignity… Drug traffickers are traffickers of death… It is morally necessary to put an end to the production and trafficking of these dangerous substances.”

With the same intention to work towards a drug-free humanity, on 24.11.2024 the Holy Ghost Church in Bangalore took a proactive step by organizing a comprehensive awareness program titled “Drug-Free Young India.”  The parish clergy, catechism teachers with catechism students and volunteers came forward to emphasize the importance of combating substance abuse. The event underscored the belief that a true Christian life is intrinsically tied to the welfare of the society, advocating that matters affecting the community deserve collective attention and action.  Recognizing the multilingual context of the congregation, the program was conducted in three languages: Tamil, Kannada, and English, ensuring that the message reached everyone effectively.

Event Highlights:

  1. Educational Stalls:

Dedicated stalls displayed information about substance and drug abuse, identifying early and advanced signs of addiction, and pathways to recovery. The exhibits served as an eye-opener, offering detailed insights into the physical, emotional, relational and social repercussions of addiction.

  1. Professional Guidance:

This initiative extended beyond mere awareness. Professionals from the legal cell, psychological cell, and medical fields were actively involved, providing expert advice and offering immediate assistance to those in need.  There was also the presence of police personals and volunteers from deaddiction centre.   Their presence underscored the seriousness of the issue and reassured attendees of accessible support.

  1. Individual Pledge:

One of the most impactful moments of the event was when attendees pledged to keep themselves and their families free from the clutches of drug abuse. This symbolic act highlighted the commitment of individuals to foster a healthier and safer environment. The Pledge reads: “I pledge that I will keep myself, my family and my loved ones away from drugs and enjoy a hale and healthy life.  I pledge that I will take all efforts in my capability to make India and the world drug-free.”

  1. Engagement and Interaction:

The program’s success was reflected in the active participation of the audience, particularly in the Q&A sessions. Attendees posed a range of questions—both simple and complex—about drug abuse, its impact, and recovery measures. The interaction showcased a genuine interest in understanding and combating the problem.

Outcome:

The Drug-Free Young India awareness program was a significant step towards fostering a drug-free community. The initiative not only informed but also empowered individuals to recognize the signs of addiction and seek help without hesitation. By involving professionals and creating a supportive atmosphere, the Church reinforced the importance of a united front against substance abuse. This event was more than just an awareness drive; it was a testament to the power of collective responsibility and faith-driven action in addressing societal challenges. The Holy Ghost Church hopes to inspire other communities to undertake similar initiatives, nurturing a generation committed to leading healthy and drug-free lives.
