(Region of Colombo) Mannar, Sri Lanka – St. Sebastian Cathedral in Mannar overflowed with joy on January 9, 2025, as Rev. Fr. Pelix Fernando CSsR was ordained to the priesthood. Bishop Emmanuel Fernando, Bishop of Mannar, presided over the ordination Mass, emphasizing the importance of discipleship and dedicated service to the people. He urged Fr. Pelix to emulate the simplicity of Jesus Christ in spreading the Good News, a core tenet of the Redemptorist mission.
The ceremony was concelebrated by a diverse group of clergy, including Fr. Chandana (Regional Superior), Fr. Sam (Vicar of the Province of Asia Oceania), and numerous Redemptorists from across the Philippines, such as Fr. Sonny CSsR (Formator at SATMI, Cebu), Fr. Jeffrey CSsR (Vp, Manila), and Br. Nouy CSsR (Thailand). The presence of diocesan priests further underscored the significance of this occasion. Fr. Chandana expressed heartfelt gratitude to Fr. Pelix’s family for their unwavering support throughout his journey.
Fr. Pelix, the first Redemptorist to be ordained from Mannar in recent history, celebrated his Thanksgiving Mass on January 10th. He was warmly welcomed by his parish community with traditional Tamil celebrations, reflecting the vibrant cultural tapestry of Mannar.
This momentous event marks a new chapter in the Redemptorist mission in Mannar and serves as a source of immense joy for the entire community. It is anticipated that this ordination will inspire and strengthen the Redemptorist mission, particularly in the northern part of Sri Lanka.
