We want to know the places of worship of our holy Brother in the world.
The third centenary of the birth of Saint Gerard is approaching. Next year will mark the 300th anniversary of the birth in Muro Lucano of the son of Domenico Maiella and Benedetta Galella. Despite some uncertainty surrounding the exact date, the most likely date seems to be April 6.
In southern Italy, where the shrine of Materdomini is located, Saint Gerard continues to attract pilgrims and devotees. His tomb, located in the Basilica, is where many are drawn. The Church of the Redeemer, more recently built and inaugurated in 1974, hosts liturgical celebrations thanks to its capacity. From April to November, numerous groups, families, and individuals come to the Shrine to seek hope, renew their faith and charity, and implore a miracle in a time of suffering or worry, but also—in the case of many couples—to invoke the gift of life, the patron saint of mothers and children. Most Sundays during this period require outdoor celebrations due to the large number of faithful.
While awaiting the establishment of a Provincial Commission for the worthy preparation of the third centenary of Saint Gerard, we entrust Scala News with an appeal, hoping that it will be taken into consideration by all those (Vice)Provinces in which the cult of Saint Gerard is widespread, and first of all by the Rectors of the Sanctuaries dedicated to him.
What are we asking for? First, a photo of the exterior, and if possible, also of the interior of the Shrine. Then, some news: when the Shrine began promoting devotion to Saint Gerard, what the most important events are throughout the year, what kind of people come to the Shrine, etc. Some photographs of the events and pilgrims are also welcome. The text should not exceed half a page.
News and photographs of all churches dedicated to Saint Gerard, even if they are not shrines, are also welcome. Likewise, those churches that, although not named after Saint Gerard, have a significant devotion and worship of our saint.
What will we use this material for? We will likely compile photographs and key news stories and display them in the main atrium that divides the Church of the Redeemer from the Basilica: this is the space where almost all pilgrims pass. We will then try to enhance the Materdomini Shrine website, which is currently under construction. ( https://www.sangerardo.eu/ ).
Thank you for your contribution towards this noble cause. Please send the material to the Shrine’s Rector, Fr. Serafino Fiore, at seraflower@gmail.com
Language shouldn’t be a problem. In addition to Italian, you can write in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.
May we ask you to send us this material as soon as possible? We can update the website whenever we want, but for printed reproductions of photos and news, we ask that you send us the material no later than May 15th. Saint Gerard thanks you in advance! And we thank him too.
We reciprocate our prayers from Materdomini… in anticipation!
Fr. Serafino Fiore, CSsR.
