How can we ensure that schools are truly safe spaces for children? That was the main goal of the seminar held on March 7, 2025, at the Pewarta Injil Dormitory Hall in Pada Dita, Waingapu. More than 200 teachers gathered to take part in this training, organized by the Anda Luri Waingapu Foundation in collaboration with the Redemptorists and their partners. The mission was clear: to equip educators with essential knowledge and skills in child protection.
A Moral Call for Educators
The seminar opened with a warm and heartfelt welcome from Fr. Jack Umbu Warata, CSsR, Provincial of the Redemptorists in Indonesia. Having spent nearly a decade working in Germany, Fr. Jack shared his experiences in education and community work. He emphasized that child protection is not just a legal obligation but a moral calling.
“Every child deserves to learn and grow in a safe environment,” he reminded the participants.
Fr. Kimmy Ndelo, CSsR, Coordinator of the Redemptorists in Asia-Oceania, further highlighted that schools should not only be places of academic learning but also safe spaces that foster trust and personal development.
“We are not just shaping their intellect; we are also nurturing their hearts and character,” he stated.
Learning from Real-Life Experiences
The seminar became even more engaging with the presence of Dr. Vincent Wieland, a former Redemptorist volunteer from CoJoBo who previously worked in Pada Dita and Anda Luri. Reflecting on his time in Sumba, he underscored the role of education in cultivating a culture of respect.
“Child protection is not just about preventing violence; it’s about creating a joyful learning environment, not one driven by fear,” he said.
Meanwhile, Fr. Dominik CSsR, Director of Anda Luri High School, encouraged teachers to be role models for their students.
“Our job is not only to teach but to inspire them to dream big and look forward to their future with confidence,” he emphasized.
Understanding the Legal Perspective
One of the key sessions in the seminar focused on the legal aspects of child protection, presented by Pater Paulus Dwiyaminarto, CSsR, affectionately known as P. Narto. As an experienced lawyer, he provided insights into both national and international child protection laws.
“Every case of child abuse can be prevented if we take the right steps and raise awareness,” he pointed out.
More Than Just a Seminar—It’s a Movement!
To conclude the event, participants joined in the Eucharistic Celebration, led by Fr. Jack. In his homily, he reiterated that child protection should not just be a discussion topic but must be translated into real actions.
He also expressed deep gratitude to the CoJoBo partner school in Bonn, which has continuously supported children’s education in Sumba.
This seminar was more than just a training session—it was a collective movement, a shared commitment to protect and guide the next generation. Because when children feel safe, they can truly learn, grow, and chase their dreams.
“Copiosa Apud Eum redemptio.”
Fr. Willy Ng Pala, CSsR.
