BANGKOK, March 30 — A devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28, causing widespread destruction and significant loss of life. The epicenter was near Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city, resulting in severe damage across multiple regions.

As of today, the death toll in Myanmar has risen to over 1,600, with thousands more injured and many still missing. In Mandalay, numerous buildings, including hospitals and schools, have collapsed, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. More than 1,000 religious structures, such as Buddhist monasteries and mosques, have been damaged or destroyed.

The earthquake’s aftermath is further complicated by Myanmar’s ongoing civil conflict, which has hindered rescue operations and the delivery of aid. Damaged infrastructure, including buckled roads and downed bridges, along with spotty communications, pose significant challenges to relief efforts.

The Redemptorist community, gathered in Bangkok for the Conference of Asia-Oceania Finance Meeting from March 25–29, remains deeply moved by the tragedy unfolding in Myanmar. Organized by the General Government and led by Fr Gerry O’Connor, C.Ss.R., the meeting brought together leaders from all 13 Redemptorist units across the region.

Reflecting on the moment the news broke, Fr Gerry O’Connor shared,

“As Redemptorists we are always moved by the fragility and vulnerability of the human family. After the initial shock of experiencing the impact of the quake, the Redemptorists at the workshops empathised with the families who so cruelly lost loved ones, and we carried this concern into our prayers and wishes to help those hurting, bruised and grieving.”

In the wake of this disaster, the Redemptorists extend their heartfelt prayers to all those affected in Myanmar and neighbouring countries. They stand in solidarity with the victims and their families, offering spiritual support during this challenging time.

Prayer

God of mercy and compassion,
In this time of trembling earth and broken hearts,
we lift up to you the people of Myanmar.
Be near to those who mourn,
comfort those who are injured or afraid,
and shelter all who have lost homes, loved ones, and livelihoods.

May your Spirit move swiftly through the hands of rescuers,
 the wisdom of leaders,
 and the generosity of strangers.
Let communities come together in solidarity,
offering hope where there is despair,
and strength where there is sorrow.

God who calms the storm and stills the shaking ground,
 restore what has been shattered,
and bless this nation with healing, peace, and unity.

In the name of Christ,
who walks with us in suffering and rises with us in hope,
 we pray.
