“Some lives are lived in service, some Souls become a blessing to the world.”

On the 15th of March 2025, the Sri Lankan Redemptorist family gathered at St. Theresa’s Church, Thimbirigasyaya, to celebrate a truly remarkable milestone—the 75th anniversary of religious profession of Fr. Neil Dias Karunarathna CSsR. It was an event filled with gratitude, joy, and deep inspiration, as devotees, friends, and fellow Redemptorists came together to honor his lifelong dedication to God and the mission of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.

Here is such a man and a priest. Fr. Neil Dias Karunarathna CSsR, a living legend of faith, compassion, and dedication. He was born on March 10th, 1931, in the historic city of Kandy. Fr. Neil was destined for a path of unwavering Faith. He was the son of John Arthur Dias Karunarathna and Theodosia Mayadunna who later devoted her life as a Carmelite nun. Inspired by the powerful preaching of Father John Mangan CSsR at Katugastota. He felt the Divine call to join the Redemptorist order in 1950, on March 15th he made his first profession beginning a journey of devotion that has spanned over seven decades.

A Shepherd to many Fr. Neil served as a parish priest for two terms at St. Theresa’s Church Thmbirigasyaya and contributed greatly as the secretary of the Bishop’s conference. His wisdom and deep understanding of Faith led him to Rome where he was entrusted with the archives of the Redemptorists. But his heart has always remained with those in need. As the priest in charge of Surol, he has cared for over 200 leprosy patients across the island. Bringing hope, healing where it is needed the most. Even today at St. Theresa’s Church Thimbirigasyaya, Fr. Neil continues to serve guiding souls, offering blessings and being a beacon of light to those seeking counsel. His generosity, wisdom and unwavering spirit continues to inspire all who cross his path.

Adding to the significance of the occasion, the celebration coincided with the feast of St. Clement Mary Hofbauer, known as the second founder of the Redemptorists. This connection served as a reminder of the enduring missionary spirit that has guided Fr. Neil throughout his journey as a Redemptorist priest. The event was beautifully organized by the Colombo community, and participants greatly appreciated the effort put into making this once-in-a-lifetime celebration truly special. The church was filled with the warmth of love and admiration for Fr. Neil, whose steadfast commitment over seven and a half decades has been a testament to faithfulness and perseverance. Following Thanksgiving Mass, a festive lunch was shared, adding to the joy of the day.

The atmosphere was one of camaraderie and gratitude, as all present rejoiced in the gift of Fr. Neil’s vocation and service. For us, as young Redemptorists, this celebration was more than just an anniversary, it was a profound inspiration. Fr. Neil’s journey reminds us of the beauty of a life dedicated to God, to His people, and to the mission of proclaiming the Gospel to the most abandoned. We thank God for the gift of Fr. Neil’s life and vocation and pray that He continues to bless him with good health, strength, and joy in the years to come. May his example continue to inspire generations of Redemptorists to come. Ad multos annos, Fr. Neil!
