A Charism in history

As part of its action plan for the six-year term, the General Government has dedicated this year, beginning March 15, to mission. To delve deeper into some aspects of mission, the General Government is also preparing a communicanda to be published on October 1, the beginning of the missionary month. To contribute to this initiative, the Secretariat of Evangelization also wishes to offer some resources for reflection, which will be published throughout the year on the following dates and with the following titles:

  • March 25: Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord: “A charism in history”
  • June 30: Memorial of Blessed Gennaro Sarnelli: “Reimagining Change in a Changing World”
  • October 1: Memorial of Saint Therese of Lisieux, patron saint of the missions: Communicanda 2, “Let us cross over to the other side” (Mk 4:35-41), published by the General Government
  • November 9: Materials for reflection and community prayer during Advent.

Specifically, in his message for World Mission Sunday in the Jubilee Year 2025, Pope Francis invites us to reflect on Christian missionary identity in a world that “shows serious symptoms of a crisis of humanity.” As Redemptorists, we have been questioning ourselves in recent years about the effectiveness and relevance of the Redemptorist mission in a changing world. All of this is closely linked to the themes of reimagining our religious identity and our call to be missionaries and pilgrims of hope in this wounded world.

The Pope also invites us “to follow in the footsteps of the Lord Jesus to be, with Him and in Him, signs and messengers of hope for all, in every place and circumstance in which God allows us to live.” As Redemptorists, we live in particular circumstances, marked by signs such as secularism and so-called postmodernism, which challenge us to rethink our mission in the world.

In this year of mission, we wish to enter with hope into this dialogue and reflection, to discern the most appropriate paths to continue carrying out our Redemptorist mission. To this end, the Secretariat for Evangelization offers all members of the Redemptorist family this first resource for reflection, entitled “A Charism in History,” which may contribute to the reimagining and revitalization of our mission and our vita apostolica.
