On April 5, 2025, the Redemptorists of the Thailand Province celebrated a momentous occasion in the year of mission with the solemn blessing of the new church at the heart of their mission in the mountainous district of Mae Chaem, Chiang Mai. This important milestone marks not only the growth of the local Catholic community but also a renewed commitment to pastoral care among the tribal peoples of the region.
The Redemptorists have been serving in Mae Chaem for over 25 years, responding to the invitation to carry out missionary work among the ethnic communities scattered throughout the hills. Their efforts have borne abundant fruit, with the mission now encompassing three main parishes and over 70 chapels spread across various villages.
The former church in Pa Fang village, located within the youth center, had become too small and inadequate to serve the growing needs of the faithful—especially with more people relocating to the town of Mae Chaem for work, education, or other necessities.
The new church was built to meet this need. Strategically located in the heart of Mae Chaem, it aims to become a visible and welcoming presence for all who seek solace, community, and faith. Its establishment is a testament to the vitality of the Church in this mission area and the dedication of those who support it.
The blessing ceremony was a grand and deeply spiritual event, presided over by Archbishop Francis Xavier Vira Arpondratana, Archbishop of the Bangkok Archdiocese and former Bishop of Chiang Mai. He was joined by Archbishop Peter Brian Wells, Apostolic Nuncio to the Kingdom of Thailand; Fr. Peter Jittapol Plangklang, C.Ss.R., Provincial Superior of the Redemptorists in Thailand; fellow priests; religious men and women; civil leaders; and local authorities. Over 1,500 faithful from various villages participated in the celebration, filling the new church and surrounding grounds with joy, reverence, and thanksgiving.
This new church stands as a symbol of the enduring mission of the Redemptorists to proclaim the Good News to the poor and marginalized. It also represents the growing maturity and unity of the tribal Catholic communities, whose faith continues to flourish despite the challenges of geography, language, and socio-economic circumstances.
The Redemptorists extend their heartfelt gratitude to all donors, supporters, and friends who have made this dream a reality. As this church begins a new chapter, may it continue to be a beacon of hope and a sacred space where God’s presence is deeply felt.
Fr. Peter Jittapol Plangklang, C.Ss.R.
