The inhabitants of Torun, Poland, recognized the launch of Radio Maryja, run by the Warsaw Province of Redemptorists as the most important event of the last century. The poll, conducted in mid-December, was organized by the city authorities in connection with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Torun’s return to independent Poland.
The Centennial event was chosen by the citizens from among 35 proposals, in a text message voting held in December. The most votes were cast in favour of establishing of Radio Maryja in 1991. The event preceded in the poll the establishment of the Nicolaus Copernicus University and the registration of the Old Town Complex of Toruń on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997.
