On 7th July 2023, the Vatican’s Secretariat for Synods issued the full list of names of the participants at the forthcoming Synod on Synodality to be held on 4-29 October 2023, this year. Interestingly, there are three Redemptorists among the participants, namely,

His Eminence Most Rev. Card. Joseph William TOBIN, C.SS.R., Archbishop of Newark (United States of America), His Most Reverend Excellency Archbishop Bohdan DZYURAKH, C.SS.R., Eparch Apostolic of Germany and Scandinavia and titular bishop of Vagada, and Fr. Vimal Tirimanna, CSsR, Professor of moral theology in Rome and in Sri Lanka.

Cardinal Tobin is participating as a member of the Ordinary Council for the Synods. Mons. Dzyurach is one of the elected representatives of the Ukranian Church. Fr. Tirimanna was appointed by the Pope as one of the Asian non-Episcopal members for the forthcoming Synod. This is the first Synod in the post-Vatican-II period that has 70 non-bishop members with voting rights. The inclusion of some non-bishop members at a Synod was promulgated by Pope Francis recently to revive the Vatican-II ecclesiology of the People of God according to which all the baptized (both the clerics and laity) form the one Catholic Church, and so, all of them (through their representatives) need to participate in ecclesial affairs, and their voices need to be heard.
