On the 9th of February 2024, the Alphonsian Academy celebrated its 75th foundation day. Fr. Rogerio Gomes, the Superior General, presided over the Holy Eucharist and was concelebrated by the confreres of the community of St Alphonsus, Rome. On this ocassion Mons. Alfonso V. Amarante, C.Ss.R. Rector Magnificus of the Pontifical Lateran University was kind enough to join the confreres during the Mass.
On 9 February 1949, in Rome, the Institute for Moral and Pastoral Studies was established as an internal school of the Congregation under the name of the Alphonsian Academy. From that day, “Alphonsian Academy” has developed as a study and formation centre in the field of moral theology, and since 1960, has been affiliated with the Pontifical Lateran University. Recently, Pope Francis, recognizing the role and importance of the mission of the Alphonsian Academy, conferred on it the title of Pontifical Institute.
During the Holy Eucharistic celebration Fr. Rogério Gomes, C.Ss.R. the Superior General of the Redemptorist Congregation and the General Moderator of the Alphonsian Academy, in his homily reflected the life and history of the Academy. In the fifth paragraph, Fr Rogerio speaks about the mission of the Academy today is to help the Church itself to listen to the world and discern the signs of the times. Based on the Gospel, “The Pontifical Alphonsian Academy has done everything right: it has opened our hearing, freeing us from deafness, and given us a new language to dialogue with the world and transform the heart of man so that the world will be a place for all. This is our dream and our duty as Missionaries of Hope walking in the footsteps of the Redeemer.
