The Davao Redemptorist Mission Community (DRMC) have recently launched a new initiative called Unity Junction, a monthly meetup hub designed to create a strong support system for Indian migrant students (approximately four thousand) residing in Davao City, Philippines.
Spearheaded by Fr. James Kizhakkeyil, CSsR (Confederation of India), a resident professor at Saint Alphonsus Theological and Mission Institute (SATMI) and a member of DRMC, Unity Junction recognizes the need for Indian migrant students in Davao to connect with each other and build a sense of community. The program offers a platform for migrant students from various medical colleges across Davao to come together once a month, empower themselves, and celebrate their heritage through cultural events.
The program offers:
- Free professional counselling: Available throughout the week to assist students with personal or academic issues.
- Motivational sessions: Designed to inspire and empower students as they navigate their studies and life abroad.
- Interfaith spiritual activities: Promote holistic well-being by catering to the spiritual needs of the students.
- Platform for collaboration: Encourages teamwork on various projects.
- The program also provides a space for students to showcase their talents and interests through:
- Arts, sports, and games: Friendly competitions create a platform for students to connect and build camaraderie.
- Cultural activities: These activities help preserve Indian heritage and traditions.
Open to All Migrants
While primarily designed for Indian migrant students, Unity Junction welcomes all migrants residing in Davao City who can benefit from various events of the program.
The inaugural session of Unity Junction, held on April 7, 2024, was a resounding success. Fr. Cruzito Manding CSsR, Rector of the DRMC, delivered a heartfelt welcome address to the migrant students, offering them a warm embrace into the DRMC community and inspiring words of encouragement. Fr. Gary Alvardo CSsR, the parish priest, was also present to address the assembly. Professors Tupas Romeo and Melinee Araune from Davao Medical Students Federation were also present and will play key roles in the success of the program.
The gathering was further enriched by the presence of other Redemptorist priests and brothers. Towards the end of the program, Br. Antony CSsR, an Indian, led the students’ group into a prayer meditation, fostering a sense of gratitude among the Indian students for the welcoming spirit of Davao and its people.
Those interested in joining or learning more about Unity Junction were encouraged to contact Fr. James K. through WhatsApp (0091-7591992776) or the DRMC office number (082 221-2245). A WhatsApp group named “Unity Junction” was also created to share updates and information about the program.
Through Unity Junction, the Redemptorist missionaries remain steadfast in their commitment to creating a supportive and enriching environment where Indian and all migrant students in Davao City can thrive.
