Hundreds of Jrai people from across the Cheoreo region gathered in Chrôh Ale Parish for a vibrant celebration of faith, culture, and tradition. The annual Gong Chieng Festival, held on June 26th, 2024, saw delegations from various parishes and hamlets come together to honour Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the patroness of Chrôh Ale Parish.
The festival began with a traditional ceremony presided over by Father Bart Nguyen Duc Thinh, superior of the local Redemptorist community. This year’s gathering held particular significance as it coincided with the 100th anniversary of Redemptorist Vietnam (1925-2025).
A highlight of the festival was the meticulously prepared performances of traditional gong music and dances by Jrai communities. The energetic drumming and colorful costumes reflected the people’s rich cultural heritage. Despite facing a temporary downpour, the festive spirit remained high, with participants forming spontaneous dance groups and continuing their performances under the dim light of phones and solar lamps.
Following the cultural performances, a special mass was held on June 27th to celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Father Giuse Nguyen Van Tuan delivered a sermon reflecting on the significance of the Virgin Mary and the cherished Marian icon. The mass concluded with a heartfelt expression of gratitude from the Chrôh Ale Parish for the continued support of the wider Cheoreo community.
The Gong Chieng Festival serves as a testament to the harmonious blend of faith and tradition among the Jrai people. The event not only strengthens their cultural identity but also fosters a sense of unity and community spirit.
