Since Monday, February 3, 2025, St. Aloysius Gonzaga Parish, Cijantung, Archdiocese of Jakarta, has taken a new step in celebrating the Eucharist. While Mass has always been conducted in Indonesian, now every Monday evening at 6:00 PM, the faithful can participate in the celebration of the Eucharist in English.
This program is not merely a liturgical variation, but an ongoing initiative aimed at providing a spiritual space for those who feel more comfortable praying in an international language. Additionally, it serves as an opportunity to welcome and engage the English-speaking community in the parish’s life.
What makes this initiative even more special is the enthusiasm of young people who have stepped forward to serve in various liturgical roles—such as choir members, lectors, and psalmists. The response from the community has been very encouraging! Each week, more than 100 people attend, reflecting the warm reception of this new endeavor.
The sense of fellowship extends beyond the church walls. After Mass, parishioners often gather to share stories and practice speaking English while still feeling at ease using Indonesian. Initially, some felt hesitant, but over time, their confidence has grown.
The atmosphere becomes even more lively as ladies from different parish communities gladly provide snacks and drinks outside the church. While enjoying these simple refreshments, parishioners engage in joyful conversations.
Looking ahead, we hope that more expatriates living around the parish will take the opportunity to join this celebration. Their presence would certainly add to the diversity and enrich the spirit of togetherness in this Mass.
One parishioner even shared their excitement, saying, “Father, it is wonderful to have an English Mass. I am really happy. I hope the attendance will grow.”
May this initiative continue to flourish and be a blessing to many!
