In the month of June, we celebrate the feast of Our Mother of Perpetual Help all over the world. Usually, the tradition is that this feast is preceded by a period of preparation with nine days of novena and then the final celebration.
Even though many titles are given to Mary and we find many shrines and churches of Mary worldwide, the title “Mother of Perpetual Help” is more universal. We find the icon of Mother of Perpetual Help all around the globe irrespective of nationality, culture, language and even religion.
According to the tradition after entrusting the original Icon to the Redemptorists (1866), Pope Pius IX expressed the desire to make her known all over the world. Since then the devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help has spread throughout the world and has become universal. Thousands of copies of the icon have been disseminated in all the countries of the world. Novena of Perpetual Help started in 1927 in St. Louis (U.S.), which contributed greatly to the spread of the devotion. This Novena is known as ‘perpetual’ because it is celebrated on a fixed day (usually on Wednesdays) of all weeks of the year. During the recital of the Novena, the faithful present to Our Lady not only their traditional prayers – Supplication, but also their letters with supplications and thanks, accompanied by the invocations of the community and with a reflection on the spiritual life.
The feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is celebrated on June 27th.
